What Copilot can't do

An honest overview, no marketing gloss: Copilot doesn't answer questions outside the connected data, doesn't replace an analyst building complex models, doesn't forecast without a pre-built ML model, and doesn't build a semantic model from scratch. It also performs poorly on unstructured or "dirty" data — answer accuracy depends directly on the quality of the model underneath it.

The main precondition

Copilot is only as useful as the semantic data model behind it. If the data is scattered, uncleaned, or poorly structured, the AI will give inaccurate answers. Get the data model right first — then add Copilot on top.

What's needed to launch it

  • License: Power BI Premium Per User or Fabric Capacity
  • Data: a semantic model published to the Power BI Service, not just Desktop
  • Tenant: a Microsoft 365 tenant with Copilot enabled
  • Query language: Copilot accepts questions in Ukrainian and Russian, though the most accurate answers come in English
  • Setup time: 1–3 days if the data model is already in place; longer if Power BI still needs to be implemented from scratch
