AI agents for marketing in Dynamics 365 Customer Insights

Microsoft has added AI agents for marketing to Dynamics 365 Customer Insights. Journey Creation Agent builds a ready-to-run customer journey from a plain-language description. Outreach Optimization Agent tunes the timing and sequence of outreach. And the Customer Insights MCP server lets any CRM agent check a customer's consent in real time. All three are in public preview.

In most companies, marketing, sales, and service each see the customer differently. Marketing sends a promotion to a customer with an open complaint in service. The account manager doesn't know which webinar the customer signed up for. Microsoft wants to close that gap with a unified customer profile and agents that work on top of it. Here's what shipped and what's useful for a B2B company.

What Customer Insights is

Dynamics 365 Customer Insights has two parts.

  • Customer Insights – Data combines customer data from different systems into a single, continuously updated profile: account details, behavior, and interaction history.
  • Customer Insights – Journeys builds and runs customer journeys: sequences of emails, messages, and actions that respond to customer behavior across channels.

Customer Insights connects with Dynamics 365 Sales and Customer Service. So marketing, sales, and service all work from the same customer profile, and agents get up-to-date context: account details, behavioral signals, and engagement history.

The new AI agents

🗺️

Journey Creation Agent

A marketer describes the campaign in plain language, and the agent builds a ready-to-run customer journey in minutes. Less manual setup and training, more time for strategy.

⏰

Outreach Optimization Agent

Runs in the background: picks the right moment to reach out and tunes follow-up sequences based on customer behavior, while respecting consent and communication preferences.

🛡️

Customer Insights MCP server

Lets connected agents check and honor customer consent in real time, regardless of which app they're working in.

Why consent is the most important part of the announcement

When a person sends emails, they at least in theory remember that a customer unsubscribed. When agents in different apps start contacting customers on their own, across sales, service, and marketing, the risk of reaching someone who never gave consent goes up sharply.

Microsoft handles this centrally: consent lives in Customer Insights, and any agent checks it through the MCP server before making contact. There's no need to rebuild consent logic in every app. For companies working with EU customers under GDPR, this isn't a detail. It's a precondition for using AI in customer communication at all.

Progresia helps set up consent management in Customer Insights so that every agent and team, across marketing, sales, and service, works from it.

What it means for a B2B company

Customer Insights is often seen as a tool for B2C brands with millions of customers. B2B scenarios are just as valuable, they're just different.

  • Lead nurturing after events. Webinar or trade show attendees get a content sequence that adapts to what they opened. A hot lead goes straight to a salesperson in Dynamics 365 Sales.
  • New customer onboarding. After the contract is signed, the customer goes through a planned journey: welcome, training materials, a satisfaction check.
  • Reactivation. Customers with no orders for a set period get a personalized offer, and the account manager gets a task to call.
  • Alignment with service. If a customer has an open case, the promotional email can wait.

Progresia sets up these scenarios together with the Dynamics 365 Sales and Customer Service integration, so a hot lead doesn't get lost between marketing and sales.

Journey Creation Agent lowers the barrier here: a marketer doesn't need weeks of learning to build complex journeys in the interface. Describing the campaign logic is enough.

Limitations to keep in mind

  • Everything is in preview. Both agents and the MCP server are in public preview. For production campaigns, wait for general availability or pilot on a limited segment.
  • Agents won't fix bad data. If contacts are duplicated and consent wasn't collected or documented, AI will just scale the problem faster. We covered cleanup in CRM and Power BI data quality.
  • Licensing. Microsoft didn't specify licensing terms for the new agents in the announcement. Check those details before budgeting.
The new Customer Insights agents don't replace the marketer. They take over the routine of setting up campaigns and make sure no agent contacts a customer without consent.

How to prepare

Progresia works through these steps with the client at the start of every Customer Insights project.

1

Bring customer data into one place

CRM, website, email campaigns, events. Without a unified profile, agents will work with fragments.

2

Get consent in order

Record who consented to which channels and store it centrally, not in scattered spreadsheets.

3

Map 2–3 key customer journeys

For example, post-webinar nurturing, onboarding, and reactivation. These are the easiest to test with Journey Creation Agent.

4

Agree on rules with sales and service

When a lead goes to sales, when marketing pauses communication, and who owns reactivation.
